Roedean School

2013

By combining places for socialising with places to be private, our refurbishment of four boarding houses at Roedean, one of the UK’s leading independent schools, has transformed expectations of the school dorm.

Roedean’s Grade II-listed Victorian buildings sit high on the cliffs outside Brighton, and have more than 200 bedrooms for the girl boarders. Designed by Sir John Simpson, the boarding houses are a fine example of Arts and Crafts architecture, and our ambition was to achieve a balance between this older architecture and new interventions.

Our brief was to create a home-from-home for both students and staff, a safe haven with a family atmosphere where boarders could feel welcomed and cared for. Rather than the institutional feel of the traditional dorm, we wanted the spaces to have personality, reflecting the character of both the existing building and its inhabitants.

“The refurbishment of the boarding houses underlines Roedean’s commitment to the highest pastoral standards, and creates a 'home from home' feeling which is so important for those girls for whom school is their home during term-time. It draws the building’s fine heritage and architectural features together with the comfort and welcoming feel of a contemporary home. The new boarding houses have certainly had a very strong and positive impact on the girls, their parents, and staff at Roedean.”
